Bookham Common

Bookham Common (NT), Leatherhead, Surrey.  Ancient woodland and wood pasture on London Clay.  This is where Ken Willmott carried out his pioneer work on the Emperor, summarised in the old BBCS booklet on the Purple Emperor.  Two 'Master Tree' areas are known, of which the easiest to work is the clump of tall Turkey oaks on the summit at Mark Oak, viewed from the ride at TQ 13333-56726.  Males visit the rides at the foot of the slope, particularly around Tunnel House car park, which is the main Bookham car park, at TQ 130556.  A great wood for White Admiral and Silver-washed Fritillary, including aberrations.
